I can’t say I disagree with any of this. Mob justice is never, as far as I’m aware, meted out with reason and due process. It’s definitely something that crops up all the time in unrefined religions, though, for the reasons you elucidate.

I have a lot of problems with how the Roseanne thing went down. Wrote an article about it, but it was too personal to share, so it’s on a shelf. In particular, there’s a narrative attached to her public stoning which stated, “Yeah, Ambien, but she would have said it sober.” This narrative is tremendously dangerous, because Ambien is quite honestly just Rohypnol Lite, and Rohypnol is a date rape drug. Throwing that narrative at the Roseanne thing is explosive, because it could also mean that using Ambien as a date rape drug, which is a real thing, is justified. “Yeah, but she would have done it sober.”

I hate to invoke this term, because I have a willful allergy to it, but that’s tremendously problematic.
