I don't think the teachers unions realize that they're destroying themselves. And I'm amazed they don't realize it.

I think it probably flows, at least in part, from a misunderstanding of what their job actually is. Their job is not to push curricula, it's to provide a safe location for children to interact socially. The value of the school is the building and the buses. If there was no curricula at all, 80% of parents would still probably put their kid on that bus.

If all they're doing is pushing curricula out over an ipad, we can get that for near free. There are apps for that.
