I think a lot of people who come to this conclusion are attributing malice (or competence) to a system that likely has neither.

The media of all flavors has one overriding goal, and that’s to make money. Hand drawing that line in one direction instead of another increases viral sharing among a certain echo chamber, and therefore increases money. That’s all the explanation we need for these sorts of things — no secret agenda is necessary to explain it.
