Chua’s most recent book is on tribalism. One thing they come to represent in the podcast is that modern political parties have become just as tightly tribal as ethnic groups used to be. For instance, the polled ethnic groups in the 1950s were very disapproving of inter-group marriage. Now you see that same thing cropping up among Democrats and Republicans. That they would disapprove of their children marrying someone who identified with the opposite party.
That’s not safe. That’s a real problem. And I think it’s getting worse, with no ameliorative solution in sight, because of this crap, which I know you’ve already perused:
