JP realized at some point that being a culture warrior can be very lucrative, and stepped into a warrior role where there was a pretty large vacuum for a particular brand of warrior. He became an avatar for traditionalism when the trad/prog dichotomy was very out of balance, and traditionalism really needed a hero.

Now he's riding the pendulum as it swings back, but the pressures of his warrior role probably broke him to a degree.
