That’s why I color coded the data points in the first scatter plot. Red states have far fewer gun controls than blue states, and there’s no meaningful correlation with the dot color and the gun homicide rate. There is definitely a huge correlation between the dot color and gun ownership rate.
The studies I’ve seen that claim “gun control policies work” are usually built on the same suicide fallacy. Suicides are correlated by ownership rate, and when you have more gun owners in a state the state is less likely to pass gun control laws. But the gun control law isn’t causal to the suicide rate. The ownership rate is causal to both.
