The actual reason third parties can’t win goes back to simple mathematics — the “game theory” of first past the post voting systems. A primer:

All you’d actually need, to make third parties viable, is ranked choice voting. If the founding fathers had known game theory (which wasn’t really invented yet) they very likely would have set the thing up differently to begin with.
