I think you’re absolutely correct on all counts. Right now I’m working on a followup article, which may turn into several more, really breaking down the differences within “gun deaths” numbers and how the “gun deaths” numbers are presented by the media. The clear numbers-based conclusion in that dive is that the main problem is suicide, and the main problem within suicide is male suicide in their professional years. Like, it’s stark.
In terms of homicide rates dropping world wide, look a little into the lead-crime hypothesis. Again, it’s hard to establish causality, but there’s some very interesting research in that area right now.
