What I liked most about this piece was that it wasn’t a deep dive into attacking or defending the IDW (I don’t like the term either), but was a personal story about your discovery of them.
My introduction was a little after yours, when I stumbled directly into the Joe Rogan #1006. (the combined interview with Bret and Jordan) In that podcast, I discovered two people who were saying the same things I’d been trying to say for years, to my peers who wouldn’t listen, and who defended that same body of shared thoughts with academic rigour I couldn’t bring to bear. It was as if I’d finally discovered my own tribe, be that tribe admittedly small and nerdy. It drove me to begin writing again, and through connections I made here on Medium, drove me to discover what I would consider to be an even more important group of thinkers who have dubbed themselves “The Rationalist Community.” You might want to look into Scott Alexander at Slate Star Codex, and also the group of bloggers at LessWrong.com. They appear, on face, to have been doing this “nuanced, science backed thinking” project for far longer.
